Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is set at B1+ on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To promote intercultural awareness and provide linguistic and cultural preparation for study/work in a German-speaking environment. To enable students to acquire the necessary linguistic and cultural skills so that they may communicate effectively in a German-speaking work environment. To continue to provide an insight into socio-economic, cultural and political structures in Germany with a special emphasis on the educational system and employment sector.

Syllabus:

This syllabus is set at B1+ on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Lecture: education environment: the educational system, universities and university life, work environment: vocational education, industrial relations, company structures, trade unions; Germany as a multicultural country; intercultural communication theory; the media landscape in Germany. Tutorial work: one hour textwork consolidates skills relating to textual analysis/production, grammar in use and German-English translation; one hour oral discussion/presentation will also focus on authentic text material (written, video, etc) relating to the lecture series. Literary texts relating to lectures will also be discussed and examined in the oral and written exams; one hour German linguistics continues with past and current developments in the German language.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: * describe in German the German education system and compare it with the Irish system, especially regarding school level, vocational training and third-level education * analyse and discuss, in German, intercultural issues and differences at university and in the workplace, focussing primarily on Ireland and German-speaking countries * present an assessment of the German media landscape in German * demonstrate confident and appropriate use of reference books (e.g. grammars, dictionaries) to support autonomous analysis and production of written and spoken German * discuss in German the main influences on the current development of the German language. * analyse in German short 18th and 19th century literary texts written in German. * use the full range of grammatical structures and vocabulary revised and introduced during the semester with an appropriate level of correctness

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module consists of a lecture common to all Humanities and Business students studying German, plus three classroom hours; these hours combine the development of linguistic and cultural knowledge relating to German-speaking countries, with a particular emphasis on preparing students to work and/or study in a German-speaking environment. Students will be engaged in active learning both inside and outside the classroom and will be encouraged to apply autonomous language learning strategies.
